Freedom of Press in India

Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, it complements a transparent government and public awareness. The constitution guarantees the right to free speech under article 19 (1)(a).

The article 19(1)(a) emphasizes on the right to freedom and expression . The citizens of India have the right to express thoughts, opinions and ideas through words, writing , pictures and other forms of media. Ironically the right to speech also includes the `right to not speak. Citizens also have the freedom to for associations, unions. Our constitution grants freedom of speech to every individual but unfortunately the essence gets lost in this chaotic unjust system. 

The press faces faces many challenges , like 

Political pressure - Governments impose legal restrictions , censorship or defamation laws to supress unfavorable reporting. Recently the ministry of information and broadcasting has drafted the broadcasting services(regulation) bill, 2024 . This bill will classify influencers and social media pages that produce content or discuss current affairs or news online as digital news broadcasters. All of them must register with the gov and must meet the content evaluation standards. 

Corporate influence - Many corporate tycoons own media houses, which reports are made to align with corporate and political interests. The Adani group owns a major stake in NDTV. 

Violence and intimidation - Journos often face physical threats, harassment and violence. Journalist Gauri Lankesh was assassinated in 2017 for her outspoken views. Many such risks are faced by independent journalists. 

Legal issues - Journos are frequently  targeted with lawsuits. The wire was sued multiple times by corporations like Adani group.

The new broadcasting bill is trying to make digital creators follow the same rules like traditional media. There has been continuous debate whether it would improve accountability or it would control the digital content. There would have been many instances where political figures were labeled as 'predators of press freedom'. A French media watchdog listed prime minister NaMo as a key figure in suppressing media freedom [article mentioned by The Print on 06 July 2021]. They have alleged that Modi preys on press by using a method based on national populism and disinformation. Albeit the gov denied these claims as biased and unfounded. 

Media during emergency (1975 - 1977)
India's media faced one of its darkest periods during the emergency imposed by then prim minister Indira Gandhi. The gov censored newspapers, confiscated publications and arrested journos critical of the regime. The press censorship order and prevention of publication act allowed the state to control the media entirely, leading to  suppression of dissenting voices. The indian express printed blank editorials in protest. It was a vulnerable period for the press. And completely violated the freedom of speech.

Although the emergency period is long gone , the press is not entirely independent. The media plays a crucial role in bringing justice to victims by highlighting injustices and amplifying marginalized voices. Journalism exposes corruption, human rights violations and crimes which lead to public outcry and legal action. 

The Nirbhaya gang rape and the RG Kar case gained attention due to persistent media coverage which forced authorities to take action , although we cannot entirely say justice has been served but something is better than nothing. 

Freedom is very fragile, easy to give but easier to take away. Even small restrictions or influences can significantly impact democratic rights and the ability to operate independently. In recent times the lines have blurred drastically but despite these media plays a crucial role in justice, accountability. We currently live in a country where students are discouraged from taking up a career in journalism due to politics, corruption. Media is known as the watchdog of democracy, let us hope the dog is not tied , shunned by intimidation from powerful individuals or groups. Here's to hoping it wont become a joke or myth to the future generations.

It ends with us

 I was so glad that this book ended.  Naked truth - I did not like it. *spoilers ahead* As you all know, I've been trying for a long time to start experimenting with new genres and this book was it. I took 2 days to finish this book, no it was not because it was that exciting but  I so badly wanted it to end. From a neutral point of view, I would say it's a decent read, the diary entries got a little boring but that part contributes to Lily's character development. The only part that I liked in this book is Lily not being a spineless fool and leaving Ryle. What would be the difference between her and her mother(whom she resented for most of her life) if she hadn't left Ryle?  Personally, I feel like Lily should've been showcased as a strong, independent woman towards the end instead of ending up with Atlas(the homeless kid whom her teenage self fell in love with, who is apparently wealthy now).
